Day Two – CLEXM Conference “Pathogens: New Insights into Imaging Techniques”.

One of our CLEXM PHD students, Fariha Mahzabin Annesha attended the conference “Pathogens: New Insights into Imaging Techniques” organised within the CLEXM MSCA program, and hosted by one of our partners, Heidelberg University. Fariha reports on her experience at the conference.

Day 2 of the “Pathogens: New Insights from Imaging” conference dived deeper into the utilisation of advanced imaging techniques across the electromagnetic spectrum and how beautifully they visualize the effects of cell-pathogen interactions on different scales.

Beginning with our CLEXM PI Ana Perez-Berna’s presentation on cryo-soft X-ray tomography. Key presentations highlighted herpesvirus-induced cellular changes and the rapid removal of Hepatitis C virus machinery after antiviral treatment. Another PI from CLEXM, Sergey Kapishnikov presented how soft x-ray imaging is possible within a lab-based setting and it’s various applications.

This session effectively transitioned smoothly from soft X-ray to hard X-ray and electron microscopy. In the afternoon, a dynamic flash talk session allowed participants to share their research in just three minutes, sparking engaging discussions.

The day concluded with Dr. Neeraja Sankaran’s insightful talk on microscopy’s vital role in viral research, enhancing our understanding of pathogen biology and setting the stage for future studies.
